If you're enrolled in college, you've likely heard the term "GPA" being thrown around. Your GPA, (Grade Point Average) is a number that reflects your academic performance over a period of time. It is a simple calculation that takes into account the grades you receive in all of your college courses and provides an overall assessment of your academic performance. To calculate your GPA, you will need to know the grades you received for each course and the credits associated with each course.
To begin the process of calculating your GPA, first collect all pertinent data related to your college courses such as assignments completed, tests taken, and final grade earned. This data will help you to determine which courses have made up your overall GPA score. Once you have all this information together, it's time to calculate your GPA by adding up all the letter grades (A = 4 points) and converting them into numerical equivalents from 1-4. You then take the credits associated with each course and multiply them by their respective grading scale equivalent – for example: A = 4 points (4 x 3 credits = 12).
Once that step is complete, add up all of these values; this will give you what's known as "grade weighted credit hours" which are used in determining the overall grade point average calculated for a semester or school year. Then divide this grade weighted credit hours sum by total credits earned – resulting in a final average. This will be displayed as a 3-digit numeric value such as 3.67 or 4.00 and is commonly referred to as "Your GPA" or Grade Point Average.
